Normality?

How can you tell if it’s safe to attend a specific location? How do you make sure that you have touch-less access to the building, a sanitised desk and chair and that there is sufficient space for social-distancing?

Taking this example further, how do you know how many desks require sanitisation at the end of a day? How many staff do you need, for how long to complete the sanitisation? How many staff are occupying the third floor and how many are forecast to be at your favourite hot-desk location next Tuesday? Is there sufficient space? Is there sufficient ventilation? How do you co-ordinate and address all considerations with so many competing variables?

You get co-ordinated. You take a cohesive approach. You bring balance. You make it consistent. You get…

The need for a phased approach

How can reopening be anything but a phased process? Many organisations aren’t equipped with timely and accurate information, nor are they prepared to act solely on data inside their organisations to make proactive decisions. External validation with as many data sources as necessary is crucial.

The need for rapid change

Reacting quickly to changing conditions in the community, workforce or both is difficult but never more necessary than during these unprecedented times. Simple processes such as communicating safety related instructions to your entire audience (e.g. do not use the lift due to Covid-19) are increasingly complex as they’re driven by multiple external factors (i.e. lift occupancy, the number of people forecast in the building, the number of people travelling above the ground floor and the Covid-19 specific measures from the locality).

Corrective action

How can you determine what’s working and what isn’t if there is no measure of success? A lack of fast feedback loops results in delays to process improvement.

Analysis based agility

Many teams are now settling into a remote, agile way of working following an initial period of major change when the pandemic began. Now that a return to work is being considered, it is inevitable that processes will require re-work too, as organisations assess the trade-off between resiliency/survival and agility/performance.
